Fishery history, textiles, and Sakana-kun!
This museum at the shore of Tateyama City is a must-see to get a broader perspective on Tateyama's history and industry. The museum is free to enter and has a permanent exhibition of fishing equipment, vintage boats, and a full-scale model of a fisher's household. For textile fans, two treats are in store. Examples of kimono dyed in the Tateyama Tozan tradition are on display. The cotton fabric colors come from natural plant dyes and have subtle colors. Maiwai, kimono commissioned to celebrate bumper fish catches, and the process used to design the stenciled images, are highlighted here, too. For amateur ichthyologists, this is a place of pilgrimage to see the love of Sakana-kun, the Fish Guy. You can see his sketches, compositions (in easy-to-read Japanese for all ages), and memorabilia.
