Quiet cozy cafe beside a shoyu factory with free tour

    Price: 500 yen

When friends visit from overseas one place I like to bring them off the beaten track in Kawagoe is to a Japanese warehouse (kura) that houses a shop, shoyu factory, sake factory and glass blowing workshop. The shoyu factory has a free tour on weekends at certain times and you can book a sake factory tour or glass blowing workshop as well. The Kura cafe is an add on to this complex, in a renovated part of the kura with a modern building built on the side.

The whole complex is off the main tourist strip so its quieter and more ambient than other areas in the kawagoe tourist district. The laneway is parallel to the main and bustling thoroughfare and offers an alternative route to the Sweet Street or Candy Alley (kashi yokocho) and the famous udon shop with a giant Styrofoam lizard on a gigantic 5 yen coin said to bring good luck. The cafe is a nice place for a quiet coffee and cake. They have a fairly decent choice of cakes. I liked that when my friend and I couldn't decide which cake to have the friendly staff member offered that she could cut both our cakes in two and give us half of each on our plate. And that is what we did! They don't have much for children though, but they were accommodating in giving our kids glasses of milk even though it wasn't on the menu. They charged of course, but it was only a 100 yen per glass. The place has more of a romantic feel and seems to most popular with young couples.

It is open from 11 am to 6 pm Thursdays to Tuesdays, closed on Wednesdays. There is parking beside the cafe. The street is pedestrianized at certain times of the day, but the parking is just at the entrance to the street so it does not cause a problem. Be careful of the rickshaw bearers who use this lane way often.
