Love the vibe
Denboin Street in Asakusa is a fun place for a little retail therapy, but it's just as fun to visit for the vibe alone. Even when some of the stores are closed, they have cool "street art" designs on their roller shutters, so it's a cool place to check out no matter the time of day.

Great for Japanese souvenirs
I love this street located near Senso-ji, particularly at night with the soft lighting from the red lantern posts. Quite a few of the shutters are painted with colorful depictions of Japanese culture. The feel by night and day are quite different so if you are staying in the area it is interesting to see the street by day and night. But if you want to pick up some beautiful Japanese souvenirs, daytime is best! They have a range of options, but I recommend the specialty stores such as the Japanese folding fan shop or the boxwood comb shop for some high quality, handmade souvenirs.

Kitschy shopping street and photo spot
Whenever I visit Asakusa and Sensoji, I make a left heading west into the back streets. Denboin Dori has always been a shopping street and it was gussied up in the early 2000s to look like an Edo era street. It's really clever - the nondescript modern commercial buildings weren't torn down but refurbished with timber fronts, kanban signs, and street decoration. Some of my favorite shops here stock festival accessories like tenugui, tabi, and happi. It's atmospheric at night, too, with the lights and decorations.
