Massive National Government Park; 65 times the size of Tokyo Dome
Namegawa Town in Saitama is a rural area, commutable from Tokyo. It is most famous for its National Park, which was the first Government Park in all of Japan. You could easily spend a full day exploring the park, which is so big it has 4 separate entrances, each with their own parking areas.
The list of attractions in Shinrin park is extensive. There is something for everyone, but it is of particular interest to families, flower lovers, dog walkers and people who like to exercise. The park hosts a number of events that promote health and exercise, such as yoga, hill walking, and tree climbing. They also have a number of exercise spots in the park and you can rent bikes and segways. You aren't allowed bring your own bikes into the park. For children there are some really great playgrounds. The adventure playground is challenging for all ages. Some of the course is not suitable to small children, but they can still enjoy walking the course. The pirate ship at the start of the course is a huge hit. There are climbing walls toward the end of the course and lots of other climbing activities. There is also a great multi-purpose playground and about a 20 minute walk from those 2 playgrounds is Japan's largest outdoor mountain trampoline. There is a restaurant in the park and some small shops that sell food too. In the summer there is a great splash pool and a shop next to it that sells kaki-kori and ice-cream. If you don't feel like walking around the park, which is quite hilly in places and too extensive for little legs, you can take the park train.
There is an entrance fee for adults and children over the age of 6 and parking is charged, but it is well worth the money as there are lots of things to do and see for people of all ages. You can buy an annual pass, which is worth it if you plan to visit often. They host special events including crafts and workshops, most weekends and during holidays, which usually cost extra money.
