Time travel to Edo-era Chiba towns
For an autumn day trip, Boso no Mura, the prefectural experience museum, is a delight. On the Culture Day holiday, admission is free, the trees start to put on their gold and red show, and the museum puts on a celebration of Chiba's culture, history, and food. The museum has hands-on workshops for all ages and interests. The experiences are conducted in the antique houses in the village. You can try your hand at traditional crafts, cooking, and even blacksmithing. The site is home to dozens of burial mounds, including the imposing square Iwaya Kofun. There are also reconstructions of samurai quarters, manor houses, and relocated historical structures. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday. I walked in from Shimosa Manzaki Station on the JR Narita line, and returned via bus to Narita Station. There is ample parking, too.
