Don't miss it in autumn, either
Takada Castle Park is well known as being one of Niigata's top sakura spots during spring, and that's justifiable as it's absolutely beautiful during that time of year. In saying that, don't sleep on it at other times of year. Autumn is just as lovely, without the fairly significant crowds of spring. Don't get me wrong, there were still people there enjoying the seasonal color, but it was far less hectic than a trip to see the cherry blossoms there.

Arguably the prefecture's best sakura spot
If you're in the Niigata area and looking for somewhere to spend sakura season, Takada Park is a must visit. It's on the list of Japan's Top 100 cherry blossom viewing spots, and the grounds are home to around 4000 sakura trees. One of the best things they do here is the after dark illumination of the trees, so even if you can't make it during the day, stop by at night -- it adds a whole different ambience. Super romantic if you're looking for a date night type feel!

Takada Park for Sakura
This is one of my favorite spot for Hanami in Niigata. The festival starts around first week of April every year and ends in about 3 weeks. The beautiful castle and the lake with 4000 Sakura tree makes the park irresistible. Do not miss the evening illumination in the Sakura trees. Entrance is free !
