Recommended for winter scenery
Kenrokuen, Kanazawa's garden designated as a national site of scenic beauty, gets its name from six attributes of a landscape - spacious, secluded, artistic, antique and has waterways and panoramic views. It delivers. I visited in winter just as the snow started to fall on the trees protected by straw ropes. Don't rush this one - take your time as it is huge with so many intimate and grand views.

One of the 3 great gardens of Japan
An absolute must visit while in Kanazawa, Kenrokuen is one of the three official "great" gardens of Japan. The other two are Kairokuen (Ibaraki Prefecture) and Korakuen (Okayama Prefecture). The garden is next to Kanazawa Castle. At this time of year you can see beautiful autumn leaves. From mid February to about late March plum blossoms are in bloom and the cherry blossoms are usually picture perfect around mid April. There is a lovely tea house in the garden too.

A must for Japanese garden fans
If you're visiting Kanazawa and you appreciate the beauty of Japanese gardens, don't miss out on Kenrokuen. This is one of the best examples of a Japanese garden in the country, and it was specifically designed to look beautiful in any season. Eventually, I'd like to have the opportunity to visit it during all of the seasons! It's not far away from the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, so you can get your culture fix and your nature fix in the one day.
