Rare preserved palace
Kawagoe Goten is one of the few preserved palaces of Japan and the only vestige of Kawagoe Castle. The castle, established in 1457, changed hands a few times until it grew into the significant hub for the shogunate. The castle is austere but also spacious. Displays and maps give a sense of the extent of the castle fortifications and the preservation process. The gardens have been restored and are now used for seasonal and art displays. It's also close to the museum and associated Miyoshino Shrine, and easy to get to from the kura storehouse streets that grew up around the castle.

Small portion of Kawagoe castle
Honmaru Goten (on maps as Kawagoe Castle Honmaru Palace) was once one of the key tourist attractions in Kawagoe city, but its lost its place over the years. However, they've been doing it up slowly over the last few years and that will hopefully attract people to do it again. They finished restoring parts of the moat earlier this year, which adds to the external appearance. Within the palace, which costs 100 yen to enter, you can get a glimpse of life of the gentry in years gone by.
