In the footsteps of the father of Judo, Jigoro Kano
On the bluff overlooking Teganuma, the wide marsh between Abiko and Kashiwa Cities, is a lookout that doesn't seem all that significant today. Once, it was the country villa of Jigoro Kano, the father of modern judo. In 1911, he settled on a large plot of land here for his villa. Today, a statue of the father of judo looks out over the marsh. On clear mornings, Mount Fuji can be seen from this viewpoint. For judo enthusiasts, this is one more place of pilgrimage, to see the patriarch forever gazing on pastoral Abiko City and majestic Fuji-san.
