Location closed in April 2024
I was sad to see a wrecking crew pulling down the noveau-retro facade of Chigusa, the confectionery shop on Kasukabe City's Fuji-dori street in April 2024. I used to get sweets that represented the city - monaka shaped like battledores, one of the signature crafts here. The good news is that there are other locations in the city. Please see reviews of those spots for Kasukabe City's treats.

Kasukabe's signature sweets
Kasukabe City has a long history of producing hagoita, the highly decorated paddles used in the traditional New Year game, hanetsuki. The game is a lot like badminton, with the aim of keeping a birdie in the air. Chigusa, a sweets shop with a long history in Kasukabe, makes sweets in the shape of hagoita. You will see the hagoita displayed all over the town. The shop makes delicately flavored sweets in each season. The hagoita shaped sweets are sold by the piece, or in boxed sets, so you can take home a little treat for yourself, and some omiyage for friends and family.
