Profusion of flowers and little red crabs

This park is a great place to catch sea breezes, view the port and Sagami Bay, and marvel at the profusion and variety of hydrangeas in season. It's especially charming after an early summer rain as the wet conditions attract little red crabs that creep along the edges of the paths. Stand stalk still and silent as they're skittish. But with some patience, you can see these little seaside forest dwellers. The park was originally a mountain fortification so you can find some castle foundation remains here.

    Would highly recommend

Shimoda Park has to be one of the loveliest places to enjoy scenic views and flowers in Shizuoka. It's walkable from the famous Perry Road area, and well worth the visit. As BigfamJapan mentioned, a great time to visit is when the hydrangeas are in bloom. We typically tack a visit here onto our beach trips to Shirahama Beach, another spot in the region that I'd highly recommend checking out.

    Hydrangea on a hill

Shimoda Park is a beautiful hydrangea park located on a hill, close to Perry Road, in Shimoda City. The park is not very big but it is full to the brim of stunning mature hydrangea flowers. As such, it is best to visit it during hydrangea season! Which is usually around the end of June to early July, but it can vary depending on how the weather has been. We were very lucky that it wasn't busy the day we visited, but I think it is usually quite busy during the hydrangea season.
