A look into the past

I've always been fascinated by the thatched roof dwellings at places like Shirakawago, and if you want to explore that kind of atmosphere closer to Tokyo the Japan Open Air Folk House Museum is a neat place to check out. It is a paid venue (550 yen for adults) but you can check out a wide range of different traditional houses – they're very photogenic, too. Keep in mind the venue is closed every Monday if you're thinking of visiting.
