    You can pet a penguin.

I’m particularly biased when it comes to Aquariums because my enjoyment is directly proportional to penguins in the aquarium. No penguins, I’m not gonna enjoy it. But I’ll try to hold off and focus on some other things. There’s a lot in Hakkeijima Sea Paradise, a roller coaster, fairly large arcade, aquarium, some other rides, and an area where you can fish and have whatever you catch cooked for you. The aquarium’s quite large and has a pretty great variety of sea animals, including giant isopods. I’m not sure who exactly is in the giant isopod fan club, that they demand to see one up close in person, but Sea Para has you covered. Lest we forget there’s also quite a few cute penguins, including really photogenic ones that almost beg you to take their picture through the glass. I’ve always been interested in the fishing area and think it’s really cool. I’m pretty horrible at fishing though, and so is everyone I know so I think I’d need some help to truly enjoy it. The thought of being able to catch and immediate cook and eat what you caught is really enticing. The grounds are really nice, the flower parks can be great to check out in season, the roller coaster’s better than the one at cosmo world, and I particularly like the arcade’s mix of fairly new and old games. There’s also a pretty big purikura selection. Finally, one area is basically dedicated to being able to touch animals. There are dolphins you can touch, as well as otters, and of course penguins. I’ve never been offered to pet a penguin before in my life, and there are few animals I’d want to pet more, so it was pretty amazing for me.

Get up close and personal with sea life

A full day of fun awaits you at this aptly named Sea Paradise. Apart from the aquariums, yes plural, they have an amusement park, restaurants, shopping, a hotel and a marina. This review concentrates on the aquariums. You can pay for a full day pass to visit all the facilities, amusements and attractions of the resort, or you can pay for an entry pass to their four aquariums. With young children, the aquarium pass with a side stop to the restaurants and shopping areas, filled a full day. The restaurants and shops are in the free part of the park. What I liked most about this really well laid out resort is the Fureai Lagoon. They only allow a certain amount of people in at one time, so that everyone has a chance to get up close and personal with the sea life. They have different types of dolphins, penguins, sea lions and a walrus. You can pet the dolphin when they come close enough. You can swim with them too, but you need to book that special event. They bring penguins out for you to meet. They have a fish reef, where you can get in knee deep to the reef and feel the fish swim around your feet. This one is a big hit with the kids. Apart from the fureai lagoon there is a dolphin aquarium, a sea farm and the main aquarium. The main aquarium holds shows with dolphins and whales among other animals. The main aquarium is also the home to the Itte Q aquarium as featured on TV. They have many different tanks, displays and aquariums over four floors. There is a huge range of sea life. In the fureai lagoon, the dolphin fantasy aquarium and the main aquarium they have areas with glass tunnels through the tanks / aquarium, so you can see the sea life swim around you. Hakkejima Sea Paradise opens at 9 am. Its closing times depends on the time of year and day of the week. They have a full English website. Parking is plentiful, but you often have to queue to park due to the sheer number of tourists this resort attracts.
