Funky, fun high rating book and novelty goods store
Officially Village Vanguard is a book store, but it is highly regarded as a great place for fun finds and present shopping. The HigashiMatsuyama branch is not a particularly big branch, but it is packed to the brim with interesting, unusual, unique and limited goods from both Japan and abroad. The Higashimatsuyama branch of Village Vanguard stocks about 50% books and 50% all other goods, which include CDs, toys, character goods, seasonal goods, foreign produce, kitchenware and home ware. The foreign produce is mainly sweets. It was one of the first places to stock M&Ms which are now quite widely available in Japan. They have a great selection of jellies and gummies. The CDs seem to be mainly compilations. The books are a carefully selected choice of contemporary and rare books, quite a few of which are foreign language. They have a good choice of children's books including some really beautiful pop-up books and books with songs, music and other activities. Outside the shop they have various coin machines that dispense toys, treats or novelty items. They also have a couple of palm reading machines. Parking is in the Peony Mall car parks. There is one floor of indoor parking as well as a number of other outdoor parking areas. All parking is free. By train the nearest station is Takasaka station on the Tobu Tojo Line from Ikebukuro. It is quite a walk from the station, but you can get a bus bound for Peony Walk Mall. Hours are 10 am to 8 pm.
