Go in the spring - it's incredible!

I lived in Fussa for a few years during our Tokyo stint, which isn't far from Ome. If you're in the area during spring, do yourself a massive favor and visit Shiofune Kannon. The temple grounds here are mind-blowingly gorgeous when the azaleas are in bloom -- seriously, it looks like something from a fairytale. There's paid parking available close by but it does tend to fill up quickly during the azalea season, especially on weekends. This is one of my favorite floral places in Japan, and that's saying a lot since there are so many beautiful flower fields to enjoy.

    Shiofune Kannon Temple

Ome is located in the west of Tokyo. You can reach it easily from Tokyo Station by Chuo line and Ome Line in around 1:30 h. From the station you have to walk around 30 minutes across the fields and mountains to the Temple. You can also take a bus from Ome Station, which will bring you in around 10 minutes to the temple. The Shiofune temple is located in the middle of a mountain slope, which is littered with about 17,000 azaleas. Therefore, the big azalea festival is celebrated at the end of April / beginning of May. The small ball-like shrubs then radiate in their most beautiful colors and simply give off a totally beautiful picture. Unfortunately, I was still a little early, so not everything was blooming, but already a part could already be admired. It also had a great advantage that the festival was not yet held, so I could save the entrance fee and was almost alone at the temple. The site has several small temple buildings, a large bell that stands on a hill and can be rung (you should just be careful not to stand next to it) and a large canon statue, which watches over the whole area. The temple itself was built in the year 645 and has very impressing woodcarving. A visit to the temple is worthwhile at any time, as in every season different flowers bloom like hydrangeas, lilies or Japanese clover. For me the most beautiful part of the temple grounds is simply to stroll between the whole azalea bushes in the small hidden paths. However, you should be careful, since there are quite a few spider webs and all sorts of small insects. There are also beautiful benches overlooking the azaleas.
