A well-worn treasure scheduled for restoration
I'm always on the lookout for bunkazai, either municipal or prefectural places that have been designated as treasures. I spied this place on Kasukabe City's list of cultural properties and had a gander. The temple dedicated to Kannon and associated with the Shugendo ascetic practice (the last remaining in this city connected to the tradition) is hemmed in by recently constructed residential buildings yet retains a garden with mature trees and statues. The temple blesses family, business, academics, and recovery from illness. The gate and the main temple date back to the 17th century. They're damaged by time and weathering and reminded me of carousel horses - well-loved but in need of care. The carpentry is intricate and startling. According to the temple's website, scheduled for restoration. Here's hoping that Kasukabe City can mend this ancient and loved temple.
