A short respite from the heat and humidity
You only need half an hour of less to visit Komakado cave in Gotenba, Shizuoka. But the dry air and cooler temperatures are a welcome break from the heat and humidity in summer. The caves, which I believe are a lava tube, are easy to enter and explore by following the man made path. Each time I've been here it has been raining which actually added to the serenity of the place. However, you can't visit during very heavy rain or extreme weather. There is a fresh water spring behind the reception box, I recommend sampling the delicious water. There is a rest area there too. Parking is on the far side of the road, it's free. Entrance to the caves is 200 yen for adults, 150 yen for high and junior high school students, 100 yen for elementary school kids. Children under six are free.
