More expensive than some others, but a quality facility
The Shimoda Underwater Aquarium is a little pricier admission-wise than some other aquariums I've been to in Japan -- for a cost comparison, our local Niigata Aquarium is 1500 yen for adult admission, compared to here which is 2400 yen. If you have kids there are some really cool hands-on experiences here, like feeding sea turtles or fish for an extra 100 yen fee.

Pleasant environment with happy dolphins
On a visit to Shimoda City, I had an afternoon free and spotted the underwater aquarium as I was cycling around. The aquarium's setting is a lagoon on Sagami Bay just south of the scenic former castle park. My timing was good as I got to meet a seal who likes the attention of visitors and she likes being petted. The dolphin show was awesome and the creatures seemed pretty well adjusted. The next morning, I greeted them from the shore and they tossed around their toys. They've got lots of space to chill out in the wide lagoon. The sea turtle pond in front of the aquarium was a little disheartening when I was there - far too many turtles in one small pond. But if you look at recent photos of the facility, it appears that the remaining turtles have a lot of space.
