    A delight in plum season

Kairakuen is one of Japan's three great gardens (the others are Kanazawa's Kenrokuen and Okayama's Korakuen), and it's best known for its plum blossoms in late winter/early spring. A couple of the other highlights are a lovely bamboo grove and an 800 year old cedar tree – it always blows my mind that a tree can be that old! Absolutely worth the visit.

One of the three great gardens of Japan

Kairakuen is considered one of the three great gardens of Japan. It is such a beautiful place that I have visited it several times over the years. The best time to visit it is during the plum blossom season, which is generally around February. There are approximately 3000 plum blossoms in Kairakuen. There are places where you can sit with a view of the trees and enjoy a refreshment. There is also a bamboo wood and cedar wood. And as it is on a hill, you have a view of Semba Lake too. The 'Kobuntei', a traditional building, in the park is also worth visiting. Arrive before 9 am, outside the plum blossom season, to enter the park for free.
