    Gorgeous castle, historical resource

Aizu Wakamatsu's castle, Tsurugajo, is a 1960s reconstruction of the castle that was lost in the Meiji Restoration, which resulted in the destruction of many significant castles. But don't let that put you off visiting this one. The view from the top of the keep is reason enough to visit, with a panoramic view of the city, the site of the Byakotai sacrifice visible from the top. The castle is now a museum that chronicles the Boshin War and its fallout. The exhibits describe the tumultuous times and the key figures of this conflict and how they came to play a part in the making of modern Japan. The castle is a must-see when you visit Fukushima not only to understand the local culture but the makings of the modern state. Rinkaku, the tea house, on the castle grounds is a lovely spot, too, for a cup of tea and some sweets, and a view of the castle and garden.
