If you have any interest in Japan's history, the Kasugayama Castle Ruins Story Museum is a good place to check out in Niigata. The castle was once the fortress of Uesugi Kenshin, and inside the museum you can learn more about who he was and the castle throughout history. It's free to explore, too! If you visit during late spring/early summer you also get treated to a bunch of beautiful irises planted around the area.
