Cutting-edge museum experience of Nagareyama mirin production

Nagareyama City's Honcho neighbourhood gained a new attraction in spring 2025, adding another dimension to the historic town. The museum reveals the history and process of the city's famed mirin. If you don't know, mirin is a kitchen staple, a fermented condiment made from rice and koji starter. Nagareyama City is where white mirin was born. I was impressed by the Japanese guided tour comprehensible to children and learners of Japanese. During the talk, the guide invited children in the audience to interact with the exhibits. The staff are eager to talk to visitors about the exhibits and fermented food culture. The museum has hands-on exhibits, a high-production short film, and subtle projection mapping exhibits. Many exhibit texts are in English and Japanese. I recommend reserving a tour on busy days.
