Steaming Sulfur Springs
This is a free outdoor area next to the Unzen Onsen Town. It's right next to bus stops although the infrequent buses will take a long time from Shimabara or Isahaya areas. There are only onsen ryokan and some small cafes and shops in this area. The onsen hells are similar to the hells in Beppu, but visitors are free to walk around on trails and look at the different view points. The sulfur smell is strong and the steam is hot. An hour is plenty of time to walk around the trails and take pictures. Easily combined with a visit to one of the ryokan onsen and shops for local foods.
