A National Place of Scenic Beauty

That Koshikawa Korakuen is a national place of scenic beauty, says it all. It really is one of the most gorgeous gardens and well worth visiting. It is located beside Tokyo Dome City - old meets new! There are several different areas of note in the garden, including some stunning bridges. The full moon bridge, pictured above, is stunning, but as far as I know you can't walk over it. Anytime I've ever visited there has been a blockade in front of it. Totally understandable considering this the original bridge from the early Edo Period. Particularly beautiful in spring and autumn.

Autumn is my favorite time of year here

I don't know that there's ever really a bad time to visit Koishikawa Korakuen, but I think during autumn when the leaves are changing is the ultimate time to check it out. The fact that the gardens have been designated as a National Historic Site and also as a Place of Scenic Beauty really give some some scope as to just how highly the grounds here are regarded. The view from the Tsutenbashi Bridge and Oigawa River portion of the gardens is breathtaking when the leaves are at their peak -- highly recommend checking it out if you have the chance.

Great landscape any time of year

This garden with its Chinese-inspired bridges and landscapes is about 400 years old, dating from the shogun period. In the spring, it has spectacular wisteria, azalea, and other lovely flowers. What’s so fascinating and educational about the garden is the greenhouse with exotic plants, and the soaring mature trees. Usually the only time I can get away to this garden is in Golden Week. The fresh green of the foliage is a wonderful relief from the concrete and glass of the city. Looking over the ponds under the leaf laden trees is so relaxing.
