Spectacular armor and weapons
Oyamazumi Shrine is still referred to as a "jingu" or nationally important shrine. The temple buildings date back to the Muromachi era with a cedar shake roof and vermillion lacquer. The enshrined deities are the thunder god and a heavenly princess. On the grounds is one of Japan's greatest repositories of nationally important swords and armor, some dating to the Heian era. About 80% of Japan's treasures are preserved here. Emperors and warlords dedicated helmets, breastplates, swords, and quivers here after victories. One novelty is a suit of armor said to have been worn by the daughter of a warlord who defended the island. The tough part - you must see these treasures with your own eyes. Photography is forbidden.
