One of Japan's important cultural properties

The Osawa Residence in Kawagoe has been designated as an important cultural property, and it has a history dating back to the late 1700s. Aside from being a super cool piece of architecture, it doubles as a souvenir shop these days -- so you can get both your culture and your retail therapy fix in the same spot.

An important piece of Kawagoe's history

The Osawa Residence is the oldest merchant store of the warehouse district of Kawagoe. It was built in 1792. It is famous for many things, but perhaps most famous and admired for withstanding dozens of fires, including the great Kawagoe fire of 1893. The first floor incredibly still operates as a souvenir store. And on the second floor there is a museum that you have to pay into. It costs 200 yen. I haven't been in the latter personally. Due to the style of the shop it always looks like its closed, but it is open to the general public between 11 am and 5 pm most days.
