Must-see in azalea season
This shrine has it all - an explosion of colours in spring when the azaleas bloom, deep history, and nods to other famous places in Japan. The legendary founder is Yamato Takeru; the Tokugawas dedicated the sanctuary, and the shrine's architecture mimics Toshogu in Nikko. If you can't make it to Fushimi Inari's profusion of red gates, this shrine is a good dupe. When you approach it on the JR Yamanote Line in azalea season, gaze out the windows as some stations have views of azaleas.

Visit Nezu Shrine
Nezu Shrine is a perfect place to take a short relaxing break since it is near the city center. The tall red gate is eye-catching at the entrance. It is fascinating to see tall trees that offer shade inside the shrine. The architecture, landscape, and structure of the area have many things to tell about its history.

A must in azalea season
If you're a lover of seasonal flowers, visiting Nezu Shrine during spring is a must. They have an impressive number of azalea flowers on the grounds here, and paired with the rows of torii arches makes it a sight to behold. The annual festival is cancelled for this year on account of COVID, but the shrine itself is still open.

Nezu Shrine and the small red gates
Always when friends from aboard visit me in Tokyo, I recommend to stop by at the Nezu Shrine. The Shrine is popular for it´s flower festivals but also for it´s beauty. all the buildings including the huge gate are red and well maintained. But one of the best part of the shrine area are many small red gates along a small hill. This area looks very similiar to the popular Fujimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto, just in a smaller version. Especially if you don´t have time to visit Kyoto, this spot is very good alternative and also less crowded. There is also a small pond with giant koi fish in diffrent colors.
