Go right now for the Ghibli exhibition
I last reviewed the Niigata Prefectural Museum of Modern Art several years ago, and mentioned the fact that they have some great limited-time exhibitions here. Right now there is a fantastic Ghibli exhibition, which wasn't crowded at all -- unlike places like Tokyo's Ghibli Museum which is a nightmare to get tickets for. I always encourage people to head off the beaten path in Japan, and heading to this museum in Nagaoka is a great way to get your Ghibli fix in a peaceful way!

An enjoyable museum with great special exhibits
The Niigata Prefectural Museum of Modern Art is located in the city of Nagaoka, a short bus trip away from the Nagaoka train station (you can walk, but it's about 45 minutes one way on foot). The museum itself is located amongst park grounds which makes it very pleasant even from the outside. The special exhibits to me are part of what makes this museum so special. I've been before but visited again this weekend for the Disney "Magic of Animation" exhibit, which was a really interesting behind the scenes look into many of Disney's animated favorites, from The Little Mermaid to the Lion King, and more recent releases like Wreck-it Ralph, Tangled, and Frozen. Admission to the special exhibit was 1500 yen, and when you exit they have a gift store set up with loads of unique Disney merchandise if you're looking for a gift. Only downside is that the museum doesn't permit photography inside the special exhibits - so if you wanted to document the journey in picture form you're out of luck, sans for a "photo opportunity" spot right at the exit. Audio guides are available for the exhibit, but only in Japanese.
