Iconic ajisai spot
If you love hydrangeas like I do, I highly recommend a visit to Tokyo's Hakusan Shrine when the flowers are at their best. Several thousand of the flowers fill the grounds here, and it creates a really beautiful atmosphere. They hold an annual festival here to celebrate the flowers, and this year's festival (2022/Reiwa 4) is running until June 19th. If you're in Tokyo and you have time to stop by this week, it's well worth it!

Place of Peace
For a shrine that is located right next to a populated university, you would expected this shrine to be busy with people walking through all the time. However, this peaceful little shrine is rather quiet and is a good break from the city. I would not say there is a lot to do at the shrine itself, so it is not necessarily a shrine to head to for a trip. However, it is also located right next to a shotengai with a few restaurants, so it is a spot to stop at if you are in the area.

Hakusan Shrine
The Hakusan Shrine is just a few minutes' walk from Hakusan Station and right in front of the famous Tokyo University. The small Hakusan Shrine was founded in 948 and is a subsidiary shrine to the main shrine in Ishikawa where Mount Haku is also located. The shrine isn't so spectacular, but always during the rainy season at the end of May or beginning of June, you can enjoy hundreds of beautiful hydrangeas around it. They usually don't bloom until June, but somehow everything blooms earlier this year, which is why the hydrangeas were already half blooming by the end of May. There were a lot of diffrent kinds of hydrangeas in diffrent colors. Behind the shrine there is also a small hill, which is full of hydrangeas,. Usually you can walk up the hill, but because of the current situation the place was closed. From the outside it was still a beautiful sight.
