Breathtaking scenery, lively monkeys and entertaining docents

Close to the top of Mt Takao there is a monkey park. The entry ticket covers admission to a botanical garden too. The monkey park is actually quite small and there are only about 60 monkeys living in the group, but the scenery and the docents make it a place worth a once off visit.

The docents of Mt Takao are probably the most famous element of this monkey park. They are known for their lengthy talks on monkeys in general and on the monkeys in this park. They give their informative lectures with personality from the centre of the monkey's house with the monkeys roaming about them. They take questions from the audience too. They have a few coin operated rides for children in the rest area near the entrance gate. There is a vending machine in this area too. There are toilets down steps and other areas of the park have steps, so it is not ideally suitable for wheelchair users or people with strollers. The monkey park is on a cliff front, so you can look out over the valley below. It is very picturesque. I recommend visiting in Autumn for the autumn foliage. However, the cable car to the monkey park is very crowded as our the restaurants and facilities near the park. The botanical gardens which are included in the price are accessed from the rest area.

The monkey park opens from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm from May to November, in winter it closes at 4 pm and in March and April it opens from 10 am to 4.30 pm. Current prices are 420 yen for adults and 210 yen for children over 3 years of age.
