Uramigataki Onsen 裏見ヶ滝温泉

Secluded open air onsen

Hachijojima, the idyllic island in the Izu Islands chain has a number of excellent onsens, but this one is my favorite. Uramigataki Onsen is named after the waterfall above it on the hillside. The water spills down into a pool surrounded by tropical plants. Across the path is a flight of stairs leading down to the onsen. It's free to use and you want to pack your swim suit since this is a mixed onsen. The times I've visited, I had the spot all to myself. It's a wonderful spot to take a break and enjoy the healing waters of the onsen.
