Grand and small nods to Kanazawa culture

Kanazawa Station connecting the Hokuriku Shinkansen, JR and IR lines has so many grand and small details that highlight the culture of the region. The big one is Tsuzuimon, the massive gate with curving and spiral forms. The design is inspired by the tsuzumi drum used in Noh theater performances for which the region is famous. Within the station, you can spot gold leaf on the pillars of the Shinkansen platforms. The region is famous for its gold leaf crafts. Look out for roundels in the waiting room of the Shinkansen which display lacquerware. Train platform gates are painted with the colours of Kutani ceramics and the concourse has traditional paper and textile patterns.

    Beautiful architecture

I love the architecture of Kanazawa Station. Parts of it make me feel like I am in an European airport rather than a train station in rural Japan. Its very photogenic so you may want to allocate time to take some photos (if you are into that), rather than just passing through. Like all major train stations in Japan, there are plenty of shops and facilities.

    Nice station, cool design

Kanazawa Station is one of my favorites in all of Japan from a design standpoint. The tsuzumi gate is a must see, the amenities are all clean, and it felt logically laid out. It's also right by the ANA Crowne Plaza hotel which is where I stayed when I visited, so it's ultra convenient in that sense, too.
