Incredible off the beaten path ryokan

If you’re after a really special ryokan experience, where you can truly feel like you’re getting away from it all, Hot Spring Lodge Daiichi in the Nakashibetsu region of Hokkaido is the place to be. Driving to the ryokan itself in the winter months see you barely pass another vehicle (which adds to the charm and the remoteness!). Part of the appeal of the ryokan is the nature watching you can often do from the premises. Japanese sables and various birdlife frequent the accommodation, and if you time things right you can get some fabulous wildlife shots. You are even able to participate in traditional activities like making mochi. I stayed in the new wing of the building and the room was very large with an excellent view of the mountains and stream behind the property. From your room you’d be forgiven for thinking you were the only guest - it’s lovely! Meals were phenomenal, with a kaiseki dinner and a buffet style breakfast with plenty of both Japanese and Western options. There are various male/female/mixed onsen options as well if you’d like to take a dip in the beautiful surrounds. I’d love to return in the summer sometime to experience those views!
