A New Zealand cafe in the heart of Tokyo
iki Roastery and Eatery is a cafe that serves New Zealand-style coffee along with sweets, sandwiches, quiches, and various other bread dishes. It is locates on the riverfront near Kiyosumi-Shirakawa station (on the Oedo and Hanzomon subway lines). It is about 12 minute walk to get there along sleepy semi-residential streets, but well worth it when you get there. It is very user-friendly with a spacious dining area, a variety of seating arrangements, and bilingual staff and menus. You can pay in cash or electronically (credit card and PayPay), with the latter fairly easy to do. As much as I love coffee, I was really there for the food and it definitely didn’t disappoint. The salmon and spinach quiche that I ordered was generous in size and very tasty, and the light green salad in the side complemented it nicely, but the caramel slice was the real star of the day for me. It was exactly what I was looking for, from the gooey but firm caramel centre to the chocolate layer on top. The coconut-imbued base matched it perfectly. It cost a little more than I would normally pay for lunch, so I don’t expect this to become an everyday sort of outing for me. However, I will definitely visit again when I feel like something from (near!) home.
