How do you feel about nuclear power?
This week, the mayor of Niigata officially approved the restarting of a nuclear power plant in Kashiwazaki. My home country doesn't use nuclear power, so it makes me a bit uneasy. How do you feel about it? Would you be comfortable with a nuclear power plant operating in your prefecture?

The same as you - there are no nuclear power plants in Ireland either and they make me uneasy too. Irish people weren't too happy when the UK positioned theres on the Irish sea side of the country! Even being separated by water makes me nervous. I really would not like to live near a nuclear power plant. In fact, if they were ever going to build one in Saitama prefecture I would move. We are in the center of the prefecture so anywhere in the prefecture would be too close for comfort.

This is a tough one. Japan increased its dependence on imported fossil fuels for thermal plants after 3/11. So we're contributing to climate change in a big way and are hugely dependent on imported fuel supplies. Sure, Japan has to import nuclear fuel, but the plants don't create air pollutants. The biggest environmental impacts are on water resources (heated water discharge) and fuel disposal. It's a tough one. I'm for operating existing nuclear plants until they reach their lifespan, and not for building new ones. Japan's electricity generation is gradually increasing renewables.

I think Japan is trying to encourage solar by requiring new houses to have panels, and I wish they would depend on geothermal energy more, over using nuclear power plants. It seems like there are more sustainable options I guess? I'd prefer to see passive solar architecture and other innovative ways to cut back on energy use.
