Pubs yay or nay?
Have you had great experiences at approximation of "your local"? Found a gem of a British or Irish pub that bridges cultures?

When I lived in Mito City I very much had a "local". It was an Australian bar called "Drunken Duck", owned and run by an Australian & Japanese couple. I believe it's still there. In my Tokyo days, my local was "the Hub" in Roppongi! Both had a great mix of regular Japanese and foreign patrons. In Saitama, my local was a yakitori until the owner, my husband's best friend, died. We have never replaced it. We go to the local 'snack' bar about once a year after a community event, that's about it in terms of a 'local' in recent years.

@genkidesu I see that the Liffey Tavern is mentioned on the Irish Network Japan website. Is it owned and/or staffed by Irish people?

@TonetoEdo the only staff I've ever seen there are Japanese, but they speak to me in English so I think it's pretty foreigner-frequented/friendly (as you'd expect!)

@BigfamJapan Thanks for the tip! I'm aiming for a visit to Mito in the next few months.

@BigfamJapan Ah, something similar happened to my local on the Joban line. It was a bar that attracted a good mix of resident and visiting foreigners and local folks. The master passed away, and the staff scattered.

@TonetoEdo it's hard to find replacements for places like that.
