Best bakery in Niigata?

I am perpetually in search of the most delicious baked goods in Niigata. My homestead is close to Niigata city, but make no mistake, I have and will travel for bread of all varieties. Please make a recommendation and let me know, but include the good AND the bad. And if there's one bread that you enjoy more than all the others, tell me about it!

I never thought I would call Japan my home, but after 20 years I understand the beauty and appeal of Land of the Rising Sun. Part of my affection for Japan stems from my bride, Manami who introduced me to the essence of this magical land. As an amateur historian and sociologist, the uniqueness of Japan’s past captured my heart and soul, bonding me to the society and culture that is now a part of me. This society has embraced me, and I am no longer a visitor, I have recast myself as a cultural hybrid, always updating my identity with the rich cultural information from the past into the present, and, invariably, the future.

Hi! Several-year Niigata dweller here. I'm partial to my local spots in Urasa (Minamiuonuma area). Basel Bakery - they have the BEST shokupan I've had in my life. Plus, the owner/operator is the friendliest lady. They typically have a variety of sweet and savory breads too, but I recommend getting there early as the most popular things often sell out. 1630 Urasa, Minamiuonuma, Niigata 949-7302 Rouge Blanc - this is another great bakery in Minamiuouma, near the Itsukamachi ski area. They have a lot of delicious breads including adorable character-shaped ones for kids, and part of what I love about visiting here is the view! So nice in any season, in fact I recommend visiting in multiple seasons so you can appreciate the varied scenery from the windows here. 2314 Itsukamachi, Minamiuonuma, Niigata 949-7101

Some good options on this site, too: https://025.teny.co.jp/gourmet/special_bread/niigatashi-bakery-2023-shimohanki I've been to a couple of them and want to try out the places I haven't already visited.

Tried a new one on the weekend, Willow House in Nagaoka. They use local wheat and rice flour and the breads are baked in a wood fired oven. We liked it a lot, and the building they're in is cool as well.

Summer reading

I know there have been questions in the past about what we're watching, but I'm wondering what you're reading at the moment! I'm looking to get a few new books for summer and I'd love to hear if you have any recent recommendations. If you have any good spots here to get EN language books in person, too, I'd appreciate if you would share those as well!

Condiments in your fridge?

Just for fun! I was thinking the other day how different the contents of my fridge are to the fridge I grew up with! Just one example, I always have soy sauce in my fridge and usually at least one other unopened bottle in the cupboard. There was never soy sauce in my fridge growing up. And the friends I grew up with don't have soy sauce in their fridges even now. But my Uni friends all have soy sauce in their fridges, because they all lived in Japan for at least a year. I was just wondering what things do you have in your fridge here that you probably wouldn't have in your fridge in your home country had you never lived here.

Moving house process

I've been in my apartment for nearly 7 years. I've got my eye on an apartment one station closer to work. But I forgot what it was like to move in here! It was all a bit traumatic... Have you got some packing tips, suggestions for how to move your household goods, and what to save for last?
