Celebrating your "Japaniversary"

This June will mark a decade in Japan for me, and I'm wondering if any of you have done anything special when reaching life milestones here. It might sound cheesy but I've spent basically as much of my adult life living here now as I have in my home country, so I think it's something worth commemorating!

Absolutely, celebrate! Two friends reached their 20th Japaniversary (I'm one year behind them) and we celebrated at a department store rooftop garden where we could take our time, chat about how Japan has changed and stayed the same, and how we've changed and grown, too! I asked a sempai who's been here for over 30 years if Japan had changed him. His answer was that he was so young, only 21 when he came over, so he feels as though he simply matured into adult life here.

@TonetoEdo I really like the idea of reflecting upon how both Japan and I have changed! I might do a blog post on it closer to June. Time sure does fly!

@genkidesu About change and staying the same - on my 10th anniversary, I returned to places that I experienced in the first week after arrival. It got me to thinking about how much I've learned - Japanese language/literacy, geography, and culture.

Celebrating these things is important, though I haven't made much of a note of my japanniversary in the last couple of years. I used to reflect on what I'd learned in the last year or overall and maybe treat myself to something special I only found in Japan or can only get in Japan. It can be something as small as a snack of melon pan and coffee jelly, or something much bigger like a proper evening out. In any case, I hope you mark the occasion well and enjoy it!

I hadn't even thought about this until reading Jessica's blog. 10, 15, 20... years is something to take notice of but I'm not there yet. Also my experience has been one of moving back and forth, living in three regions, and um... forgetting how long it's been most of the time. I meant to only stay for a year but it's been total 8 and a half already. I'm more likely to notice it's been a year at a job or in a specific city, then forget after that.

When I celebrated my 10th year, I went back to the very first train station I got off at and walked around that area. There was nothing to do there, and I had dinner at Yayoiken, which is nothing special but it was the first meal I did. Reflecting on my first moments was really interesting.

Anyone else getting a database error after you log in? So far, it looks like I can still write posts, but I had trouble logging in and after log in my home page looks different to normal with a "database error" message.

Condiments in your fridge?

Just for fun! I was thinking the other day how different the contents of my fridge are to the fridge I grew up with! Just one example, I always have soy sauce in my fridge and usually at least one other unopened bottle in the cupboard. There was never soy sauce in my fridge growing up. And the friends I grew up with don't have soy sauce in their fridges even now. But my Uni friends all have soy sauce in their fridges, because they all lived in Japan for at least a year. I was just wondering what things do you have in your fridge here that you probably wouldn't have in your fridge in your home country had you never lived here.

Moving house process

I've been in my apartment for nearly 7 years. I've got my eye on an apartment one station closer to work. But I forgot what it was like to move in here! It was all a bit traumatic... Have you got some packing tips, suggestions for how to move your household goods, and what to save for last?

Golden Week 2025 plans?

This year's Golden Week gives us Tuesday, April 29th, and then potentially a four-day weekend from May 3rd to 6th. How are you intending to spend the break? Will you travel, "staycation", or dare I ask, work through it?
