How are we feeling about Takaichi as LDP President (and likely PM)?

The big news from yesterday is that Sanae Takaichi won the LDP party president vote, which means she's the person most likely to then be PM once the extraordinary session of the Diet takes place. How do you feel about this? Are you thinking it's Japan taking a step in the right direction by having their first ever female PM, or are you like me and a little skeptical of some of her conservative policy stances?

The first female prime minister is HUGE. But this woman as the first, doesn't bode well for us. Us as women, us as foreigners, us as society. Like you, I am very skeptical. On the one hand she has pledged to improve gender balance in her cabinet to and introduce family-friendly policies, on the other, she opposes female ascension to the throne and women keeping their own surname after marriage. Like Japan, she is a mix of contrasts!

Mixed feelings here. On the one hand, elevating a woman to a leadership role is a step forward and may open the door to others. Takaichi's campaign mentions increasing the representation of women in government. On the other hand, her remarks about alleged deer-kicking foreigners are disappointing not just because of sensationalizing crime by foreigners. In her response to an Asahi interview, she appears to conflate foreign visitors with foreign residents, discussing "coexistence." To my mind, welcoming tourists, building a plan to alleviate overtourism, and taking action to integrate foreign residents into Japanese life are the words I want to hear. All separate issues.

I find it very interesting that the yen fell to its lowest point in months -as reuters put it "Japanese yen fell to its weakest level against the dollar since mid-February on Thursday as the newly elected leader of Japan's ruling party Sanae Takaichi failed to instill confidence in the market about the direction of the currency"

I agree with the mixed feelings sentiment. I do think she is an interesting person although I don't know much yet. It sounds like things will be conservative, similar to the Abe era, and most people will ignore politics as usual. The good news is that things take forever to change here, so it's unlikely that any of her unsavory campaign ideas will ever come to fruition.

What are our consumer rights in Japan?

Do you know your consumer rights in Japan? And if so, would you be willing to share anything about them? For example, what is the policy on returns? I am very familiar with my consumer rights in my home country, and they are very widely publicized back home, but information doesn't seem to be as transparent or readily available here. Or is that just me?

Do you have a favorite mascot?

The other day, on "Strawberry Day" I wrote about "Yoshimin", the strawberry mascot of Yoshimi. I thought it might be fun to introduce a few others, so I've just written about "Tokimo" the mascot of Kawagoe. And I plan to introduce a couple of my favorites. It begs the question, do you have a favorite mascot? And how about writing a post on City-cost about your favorite or a local mascot? Pictured "Umerin" who I plan to write about next!

Growing Mushrooms

Here's for a weird hobby. I just saw a video by an American Youtuber that I plan to watch about growing shiitake mushrooms. From what I've seen, it probably needs a bit of space. There was a local market in Fukuoka Prefecture that had a "mushroom room" where they grew and sold mushrooms like maitake and eringi. I also saw a video of a couple in Paris that built a mushroom growing shower room! The local hardware store sells "seeded" logs and shiitake mushroom growing kits. I have seen the logs around people's homes on occasion. It seems like a very odd, but sustainable hobby. Has anyone tried it, or is anyone interested to try this? I wonder how involved or beginner friendly it is.

Hair Color Treatments for Greying Hair

For those of you who have colored grey hair, I'm curious about the hair color treatments available in most drugstores. They seem simpler to use than box dyes. It's been many years since I've colored my hair. It's a chestnut brown and my grey is more silver. I don't hate it but the grey is dry and making me feel like I look older than I am. I'm especially interested in the natural brands that are non-permanent. For example Rishiri Kombu sounds like a decent option. Looking forward to your recommendations and experience.

Is your locale suffering from overtourism or is it...crickets?

I've lived on the periphery of Tokyo, commuted in for some years, and finally pulled back. Is the city or region you live in crowded with tourists from abroad or is it an off-the-beaten track location? Do the claims of "overtourism" ring true to you or do you think it's overblown?
