Which season is your favorite for its food?

One thing I love about autumn is the abundance of tasty treats -- it's probably my favorite time of year for seasonal eating because I love sweet potato, chestnut, and kabocha flavored goodies, and there are so many out there to enjoy. Do you have a favorite time of year for seasonal snacks? Maybe you love the freshness of choc-minty things in summer, the vitamin C packed citruses of winter, or all things sakura in spring. Would love to hear your favorite time of year for eating and why you picked that timeframe!

Fall / Winter. I don't have much of an appetite and struggle during summers here. It's always nice to be able to tolerate baking or making hot foods again. I Love nabe and have never gotten into cold soups. This time of year I start making chestnut rice and have been addicted to pears. All the seasonal foods. yum.

This is a tough question! In autumn, I'm bowled over by the choice of cheap and nutritious produce. I've told you about many of my culinary experiments and experiences. Search for TtoE for my food blogs.

@TonetoEdo I always enjoy your cooking-related blogs! The recent one you shared about figs reminded me of my Nonna who used to have a fig tree in her backyard. She was a great cook and would make her own jam from them (and various other fruits, too!)

@genkidesu You say Nonna...so Italian grandma? My Oma, Ukrainian-born Mennonite grandmother, often made soup from seasonal greens. I'm experimenting with Japanese veggies to do whatever-is-available borscht.

@TonetoEdo Yes, half-Italian on one side of my family and Irish origin on the other! I can only imagine my Italian grandparents would have had a real chuckle at some of the innovative pizza toppings here!

@helloalissa same! And I don't get the same kind of comfort from cold food on a hot day as I do from hot food on a cold day! Unfortunately though I am allergic (only in recent years) to two of Japan's autumn staples - chestnuts and persimmon!

This month, May 2025, is abundant with cheap and delicious veggies. The prices of vegetables in Chiba and Saitama area supermarkets are much lower than the preceding winter. May is great for chingensai, komatsuna, and turnips. Right now, there's a bumper crop of nira, too.

Your favorite ways to unwind in Japan

A few little stressors have been popping up in my life lately, so I was wondering about your favorite ways to unwind here -- the big and the small. One of mine is definitely onsen when I have the chance to go, but that's not always an "easy to do everyday" thing. Let me know in the comments so I can incorporate some of them into my routine!

Dark sky near you and easy to access?

Where do you go to see the Milky Way? Is the location easy to get to without a car? I'm thinking about late autumn and winter getaways when the skies are likely to be clear. The last time I had a good view was in the Izu Islands in winter. I got there by overnight ferry and rambled around on a rented bicycle.

Are you happier in Japan than your home country?

Saw a list today via TimeOut which covered their "Happiest Cities" for 2025. (https://www.timeout.com/news/the-20-happiest-cities-in-the-world-in-2025-according-to-locals-101025) A couple of cities in my home country made the Top 20 (Melbourne and Sydney), but Japan was noticeably absent. It got me thinking. Would you say you're happier here than you were in your country of origin? Would love to hear your arguments for or against, and why that's the case.

Do you see dekotora in recent years?

I feel like in the last 20 years I see dekotora less and less. The only place I see dekotora regularly now is at two festivals I tend annually where they have a dekotora display. But the number of dekotora participating in those events also seems to be dwindling in recent years. So my question; do you still see dekotora in the wild, so to speak? Or do you only see them at special events?
