What's a Japanese autumn tradition you've really come to love?
I mentioned in a blog yesterday that one of the things I love about autumn is the yakiimo warmers that pop up in convenience stores, supermarkets, and farmer's markets at this time of year. What's an autumn tradition that you've come to love during your years here? It could be anything...food-related things, autumn festivals you really enjoy, or possibly something else entirely!

Seeking out autumn leaf spots wasn't on my list of autumn things to do in my hometown, Vancouver. While the leaves are pretty and pile up on streets and in parks there, I wouldn't go out of my way for a leafy spot. Here, planning trips to specific spots is a thing. And I get in a few trips every autumn to see somewhere decked out in red and gold. Matsutake gohan and kuri gohan are in my autumn recipe repertoire.

@TonetoEdo I agree with you, autumn leaf spotting isn't really a thing back home for me. I do think living here has just given me an overall better appreciation for nature and seasonality than Australia did.

@genkidesu Curiously, the abundant autumn leaf viewing here made me appreciate my own country more. The south coast of British Columbia and Pacficic North West of the US experience brief and often wet autumns. However, parts of Quebec, Ontario, and parts of the east coast of Canada have spectacular fall colours. I'd like to see them some day.

Definitely checking out colorful leaves. From the night illuminated ones to the ones in the mountains. We have gone to the Expo Park in North Osaka for fall leaves every year for a while. Actually we mainly go for the roses and cosmos. Is it an autumn tradition if I say "setting up the kotatsu?" It's like a symbol of the delicious food we start eating this time of year.

What came to mind first is Autumn Festivals. I am a big fan of Autumn Festivals, particularly because (although I would love to), I rarely go to summer festivals because its just too hot for me. So I love that I still have plenty of opportunities, for both festivals and fireworks, in autumn. Its a much better time of the year for them in my humble opinion.
