Your 2026 food omiyage / souvenir picks?
I know this question has probably been asked several times in the past, but it is also the kind of question to which the answer changes frequently! So, I am curious - what are your top food souvenir picks for 2026? I am going home again soon, and I want to get food omiyage for several people, including the school where my son is about to finish a one-year exchange. I would love to hear your thoughts on the BEST Japanese food omiyage around this year! And / or the food omiyage you buy each and every time you are going home because it's always a big hit? I just had the photo in this post to hand, and it is not a recommendation per se, it's not bad and fits well into a suitcase, but it's not the best strawberry daifuku I ever had.
Former nickname was "Saitama". Changed it to save confusion on place review posts! Irish, 20+ years in Japan! I also write on my personal website: insaitama.com

I brought home a box of 人形焼き ningyoyaki, and they were a hit with my rellies! I get them at Asakusa. Some goofy things to bring back are まずい棒, "foul tasting sticks", produced by the Choshi Electric Railway. The snack riffs on umaibo, the popular corn-based flavoured snack. The railway makes more money from snacks than from fares. Your omiyage purchase keeps the railway running and your friends amused.

@genkidesu You can't go wrong with Tokyo Banana. The package is emblazoned with Tokyo in English so it's a little less mysterious to non-Japanese readers. It travels well, and the flavour and texture appeal to most people. Japanese language learners in your crowd might like the mix of kanji and kana on the label.

@TonetoEdo I agree! I think they are also pretty friendly for palates that aren't very used to Japanese flavors like matcha, kinako, or anko like a lot of treats incorporate. I've had a few fussy-eater Aussies visit me over here, and they have always enjoyed Tokyo Banana. A safe omiyage, even if it is one of the more commercialized ones!

@genkidesu Some of my rellies turned their noses up at good stuff I brought home. Cheap, identifiable sweets appealed to them.
