Entrance ceremony clothes

Soon my kid will have his entrance ceremony at school, and I'm looking for those typical Japanese style ceremony clothes for myself. I'm 1.80m, not so skinny woman, which has huge problems to even find normal clothes in Japan. Does anybody have the same problem and might have any advice, where to get those ceremony clothes in a taller size?

I think it depends on how picky you are. Nissen and Zozotown stock larger sizes for separates. An idea - a light-coloured tweed blazer or jacket with trousers. You get a lot of mix-and-match after - jacket with jeans and skirts for casual wear. I get some of my separates from Erina, Zara, BR, for workwear, semi-formal, and black formal.

Zara was also going to be one of my suggestions, and Aoki as well. I like ToneToEdo's idea of getting items that you can utilize afterwards, especially in this economy...it's nice being able to get continued use of things rather than one-off purchases.

@genkidesu IME, Zara stocks a wide range of sizes, so BlueButterfly may find something suitable that would accommodate her height. From my observation of entrance ceremonies at schools, women tend to wear separates - swingy skirts or roomy trousers with white or light-coloured blouses with jackets with or without lapels. You don't have to do black formal matchy.

@TonetoEdo I shop there on occasion and I've also found their size range to be pretty decent. I'm only 163cm so on the shorter side of things, but there have definitely been trousers I've tried on and would have needed them significantly hemmed -- so hopefully the taller ladies among us would find some success there. Even H&M might have some pieces that could be suitable, they have some workwear styles (blazers, trousers, etc.) at their stores and I find their sizing is more European.

Shimamura has affordable formal and office wear and they have a plus size section. If you can, pair any dressy items you have and those from the shops you already like to make an outfit. As mentioned you don't have to be super formal but I would avoid casual and colorful items. It's only a couple hours, right?

I am way too late, I presume the entrance ceremony has been and gone! So, what did you end up wearing and where did you find it?

Fears in Japan that you didn't have in your home country?

I've written a number of blogs here on City-Cost about how bears are a real worry in my area these days, and it's something that I didn't have to concern myself with in my home country. I know people talk about snakes and spiders in Australia being deadly (and yes, there are some types that are), but they're not typically going to come and attack you unprovoked. Also, it's a lot easier to outrun a snake or a spider than a bear ;) I'm curious about the rest of you, if you have fears here that maybe weren't present in your country of origin. Let me know in the comments!

Christmas - shopping, meals, etc. - how are we faring?

I saw a press release this morning from FamilyMart, which promoted their festive season eats but also covered a survey about spending. The survey mentioned most people planning to celebrate Christmas at home aim to spend less than 5,000 yen on food. How does your budget look in comparison to that? Do you go all out for Christmas here if it was something you celebrated in your home country, or is it a quieter celebration owing to it not being an official holiday here? How about Christmas shopping? Have you got strict budgets in place, and have you completed your shopping or are you still looking for bits and pieces for people?
