Favorite mosquito repellent products?

It's rice planting season which means our local fields are all filled with water -- a.k.a. the perfect breeding ground for mosquitos. My son is super susceptible to bug bites and his skin swells up quite a bit when they attack him. When they were younger I'd use the cute mosquito repellent stickers and bracelets that you can get from places like Nishimatsuya, but now that they're older I'd like to get something a bit more suitable for the whole family. Do you have any recommendations for insect repellent body sprays/mists/gels that have worked well for you? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

My kid has the same problem. He often gets many bites and they get very huge this year. Still wondering why it´s so diffrent than the last years for him. Since I put Skin Vape Insect Repellent Spray (adult version) on his whole body it got way better. But be careful I first just put it on his legs and arms, but then the mosquitoes started to bite them in his face a lot. Since I put also some spray in his neck, no bites so far.

@BlueButterfly Awesome, I'll look into that brand! Thank you for the tip about making sure I put it on my son's neck, too.

I have little bottles of tea tree oil I use to soothe bites, and some sources suggest the oil has bug-repellent qualities. How about lavender-based sprays? There are many recipes for DIY bug repellents, mostly with lavender.

Fears in Japan that you didn't have in your home country?

I've written a number of blogs here on City-Cost about how bears are a real worry in my area these days, and it's something that I didn't have to concern myself with in my home country. I know people talk about snakes and spiders in Australia being deadly (and yes, there are some types that are), but they're not typically going to come and attack you unprovoked. Also, it's a lot easier to outrun a snake or a spider than a bear ;) I'm curious about the rest of you, if you have fears here that maybe weren't present in your country of origin. Let me know in the comments!

Christmas - shopping, meals, etc. - how are we faring?

I saw a press release this morning from FamilyMart, which promoted their festive season eats but also covered a survey about spending. The survey mentioned most people planning to celebrate Christmas at home aim to spend less than 5,000 yen on food. How does your budget look in comparison to that? Do you go all out for Christmas here if it was something you celebrated in your home country, or is it a quieter celebration owing to it not being an official holiday here? How about Christmas shopping? Have you got strict budgets in place, and have you completed your shopping or are you still looking for bits and pieces for people?
