Making bread, no oven

Do you make bread without a full-fledged oven? How do you do it? What kinds of breada do you recommend to a noob baker without an oven? I have a cheapo toaster oven and a frying pan with a lid and would like to have a go at making yeast breads.

I haven't yet tried it myself, but I have actually seen a few frugal influencers that I follow on Instagram using Dutch ovens to bake sourdough on their stovetops. I'm inspired to give it a go, since we go through a fair bit of bread and it would be nice to DIY for the health and cost benefits. There are some resources online if you search for phrases like "stovetop bread baking" or "Dutch oven baking".

We actually have an oven and I have never baked bread. It's something I thought about this winter, but making yeast breads with almost no counter space sounds like too much. Try searching "rice cooker bread" - I thought this might be a thing and now I wanna try it.

@helloalissa I'm so jealous...if I could pick one thing to have in a kitchen that would make life so much easier here it would be an oven! I had seen people online baking cakes in their rice cookers, so I should have put two and two together that bread could be possible as well. It's nice to know that there are some options available, even if they do require some thinking outside the box!

@genkidesu Do you have a Dutch oven? I'll research them to see if I can manage one in my kitchen. Only two gas rings!

@helloalissa I don't have a rice cooker. About 5 years ago, mine went kaput and I've been using a donabe ever since with great results.

@TonetoEdo I have one but have never tried using it to make bread! We often use it for soups/stews in winter, though!

@TonetoEdo It sounds a bit inconvenient but probably more delicious to cook rice that way! I depend on my rice cooker's timer function and the fact that I don't have to stay in the kitchen to cook so for me it's a must. Anyway, I'll be looking for your results of no oven bread experiments.

@helloalissa One of the joys of donabe rice cooking is おこげ okoge, flavourful scorched rice. It does take a bit of effort not to overdo it, and then some elbow-grease to get the remains off the bottom of the donabe. Before the weather gets too hot, I'll have a go at frypan bread recipes and tell you about the results!

What are our consumer rights in Japan?

Do you know your consumer rights in Japan? And if so, would you be willing to share anything about them? For example, what is the policy on returns? I am very familiar with my consumer rights in my home country, and they are very widely publicized back home, but information doesn't seem to be as transparent or readily available here. Or is that just me?

Do you have a favorite mascot?

The other day, on "Strawberry Day" I wrote about "Yoshimin", the strawberry mascot of Yoshimi. I thought it might be fun to introduce a few others, so I've just written about "Tokimo" the mascot of Kawagoe. And I plan to introduce a couple of my favorites. It begs the question, do you have a favorite mascot? And how about writing a post on City-cost about your favorite or a local mascot? Pictured "Umerin" who I plan to write about next!

Growing Mushrooms

Here's for a weird hobby. I just saw a video by an American Youtuber that I plan to watch about growing shiitake mushrooms. From what I've seen, it probably needs a bit of space. There was a local market in Fukuoka Prefecture that had a "mushroom room" where they grew and sold mushrooms like maitake and eringi. I also saw a video of a couple in Paris that built a mushroom growing shower room! The local hardware store sells "seeded" logs and shiitake mushroom growing kits. I have seen the logs around people's homes on occasion. It seems like a very odd, but sustainable hobby. Has anyone tried it, or is anyone interested to try this? I wonder how involved or beginner friendly it is.

Hair Color Treatments for Greying Hair

For those of you who have colored grey hair, I'm curious about the hair color treatments available in most drugstores. They seem simpler to use than box dyes. It's been many years since I've colored my hair. It's a chestnut brown and my grey is more silver. I don't hate it but the grey is dry and making me feel like I look older than I am. I'm especially interested in the natural brands that are non-permanent. For example Rishiri Kombu sounds like a decent option. Looking forward to your recommendations and experience.
