What do you most associate with Saitama?

November 14th is Saitama Prefecture Day. I am curious, especially as I live there, what is the FIRST thing that comes to mind when I say "Saitama Prefecture"? About Saitama Prefecture Day; https://www.city-cost.com/blogs/BigfamJapan/wmeY2-living_saitama

Funnily enough I would say one of the main things I associate with Saitama is you! You do a really brilliant job of promoting the prefecture, I think they should hire you for marketing and PR stuff! In terms of attractions, I think Kawagoe is a big one that comes to mind. When I lived in Tokyo we would often take visitors there who wanted that traditional streetscape feeling but weren't headed down to Kyoto or elsewhere. I also think of bonsai (the museum in Omiya) and Omiya as a whole, because the shinkansen from Tokyo to Niigata stops there.

The first thing that comes to mind is Omiya Bonsai Village. It's impressive with stone paving, lush private gardens, and open bonsai nurseries. I think it represents Saitama with its mix of art, craft, and industry.

@genkidesu Me, too! I keep going back to Insaitama for weekend excursions as Saitama is adjacent to Chiba Prefecture. A wealth of info - https://insaitama.com/

@TonetoEdo yes, her blog is so detailed and honestly one of the best resources out there for Saitama-related things to see and do!

@BigfamJapan Thanks to your effort, I get a lot of insight into Saitama spots. As you know from my posts, retro towns are on my list. I'm a repeat visitor to Kawagoe with my international guests. I'm curious about Okegawa City and Ogawa Town. Is there enough to see and do to merit day trips at these locations?

Desptite it's reputation, there are charming neighborhoods in Saitama. First I think of Omiya, as I studied calligraphy in Kita-ku and still stop by when I'm in Kanto. I used to walk through Bonsai cho. The last time I was there I walked through the park and bought a bunch of freshly made senbei from a little shop near there. I worked in Kazo city which is known for koinobori decorations. There are huge koi in their fountains and they have koinobori shaped taiyaki.

@helloalissa a reputation undeserved. I did not know about the koinobori shaped taiyaki. I have to try that. Thanks for sharing.

@TonetoEdo Ogawa town, in my opinion, yes, at anytime of the year. But unfortunately it is not very well serviced by public transport. Okegawa .... hmmm, there are things to do and see all year round, but they're not very engaging. However, seasonally, yes. For example, when the safflowers are in bloom near the new roadside station, or the cherry blossoms x tulips in Shiroyama park, which is across the road from the roadside station. There is an old air base museum within relative walking distance of the park. There is a better bus service in Okegawa. And you would need to use it, because around the station there isn't much, well there's the old nakasendo. There are some really nice festivals on around the station in summer and autumn though.

@BigfamJapan Thanks for the heads-up on transport in and around these locations. I guess I'll mark Okegawa on the calendar for flowers and nature walks.

Japan's biggest oversells?

I mentioned in a Q&A recently that I went to a place several years ago called Minetopia Besshi in Ehime, which branded itself as Japan's Machu Picchu. It was a big oversell! BigFamJapan also mentioned that there's a place in Saitama branded as Japan's Cappadocia, which also might be a bit underwhelming for some! It doesn't have to be somewhere necessarily compared to another world famous spot, but have you found many places here that oversell themselves? I'm not often disappointed when I visit places here, so when I am it's probably all the more noticeable.

Your favorite pottery type in Japan?

I have really gotten into all things pottery since living here, and I have a soft spot for both Kutani ware (the first pottery type I discovered here, and it's so vibrantly colored!) and Arita ware. ToneToEdo mentioned Tobe-yaki in recent Q&A about things we associate with Ehime, and it's a pottery type I didn't know much about beforehand. If you're into pottery here, do you have a favorite type?

Living on Japanese time?

Do you eat with your family at a particular hour? My interactions with neighbours and friends suggest their dinner time is much later than mine. Do you have a favorite mascot?

The other day, on "Strawberry Day" I wrote about "Yoshimin", the strawberry mascot of Yoshimi. I thought it might be fun to introduce a few others, so I've just written about "Tokimo" the mascot of Kawagoe. And I plan to introduce a couple of my favorites. It begs the question, do you have a favorite mascot? And how about writing a post on City-cost about your favorite or a local mascot? Pictured "Umerin" who I plan to write about next!

Who is your hero!?

Today, January 16th, is Hero Day. Who is your favorite hero, fictional or otherwise? The first one who comes to my mind for me is a real life person; Mary Robinson, a former president of Ireland (moreover, the first female president), and a former United Nations High Commissioner of Human Rights, among other impressive roles. I had the great pleasure of meeting her in December, a dream come true. I was trying to think about who my favorite fictional hero is. I have not come to conclusion yet! There is such a choice. Do you have one?

Growing Mushrooms

Here's for a weird hobby. I just saw a video by an American Youtuber that I plan to watch about growing shiitake mushrooms. From what I've seen, it probably needs a bit of space. There was a local market in Fukuoka Prefecture that had a "mushroom room" where they grew and sold mushrooms like maitake and eringi. I also saw a video of a couple in Paris that built a mushroom growing shower room! The local hardware store sells "seeded" logs and shiitake mushroom growing kits. I have seen the logs around people's homes on occasion. It seems like a very odd, but sustainable hobby. Has anyone tried it, or is anyone interested to try this? I wonder how involved or beginner friendly it is.
