What's on your Christmas list this year?

Curious to know what everyone's hoping for this Christmas! Is it a sign of my age now that I want a robot vacuum?! I can recall a time when getting a cleaning object may have been downright offensive, but not these days! I don't really have much else that I want or need. How about the rest of you?

    We don´t exchange presents this year, but usualyl I don´t need anything. i prefer more to go on a trip instead of something material.

    @BlueButterfly yes, I think that's often what we gravitate towards now as well. I think we all get to a point as adults where if we want something we just buy it ourselves!

    I find I'm all about books and anything related to surfing these days. It used to be DVDs but services like Netflix have made those pretty redundant. Before that it was CDs again, iTunes and all that ... Family back home like to send a few bits and bobs out for me to open, so books are an easy enough item for them to send out. The partner and I each year find it harder to think of what to get each other. It's a weird situation -- you want to keep that Christmas magic alive but at the same time it's like, well, we don't really need anything. I totally understand the "robot vacuum" sentiment though, I think what we could actually do with is a new washing machine or a set of bath towels or something, but, I don't know, that sort of stuff seems a long way from my memories of Christmas as a child. Ha ha! We always go out on a Christmas date though. And I've got a thing for Percy Pig sweets and orange Matchmakers chocolate (I don't know if anyone on here knows what they are) so I always ask for some of those to be sent out!

    @Tomuu books are always good! It's a resolution of sorts for me to try and read at least one book a month in the new year, but I might cut myself some slack and allow audiobooks into the mix. I actually asked for new towels last Christmas, so I feel you there! When did we get official "old person" status?! And tastes of home are fab. A friend sent me Christmas pudding and custard mix for previous Christmases, and I was thrilled!

    Yaas robot vacuum. Haha, seriously, we don't celebrate Christmas or need anything. It's all about staying cosy and eating yummy foods, maybe getting out to enjoy some lights or see family.

    It is very random, but my family is sending me a Christmas package and am really hoping they mail me some Cliff and Kind bars and some pumpkin spice cheerios. Haha.

    I want to travel outside Japan to escape winter, but we are on a budget so we are just traveling locally and go snowboarding ^_^ As for material stuff, I want a new lens for my camera.

    All I want is rest and relaxation for Christmas! Seriously. I already have a vacuum cleaner that is bag-free (I wash out the filter and spritz it with essential oil, all good), and has a crevice tool. It's my best friend when I do Osoji. Busting it out on a Saturday morning is one of my joys. My place is not big enough to merit a robo vacuum gadget. I'd be happy if my guy, Daikichi, brings me groceries I can cook up for a big feed. Hogswatch/Christmas happens to be midweek, so whatever-nabe and some fried things are festive enough for me on the following weekend.

    I really don't need it but man I love getting edible items! It is partly because it is a thing that I can use up and it isn't a waste. I even like things I can cook with, the stuff I wouldn't normally buy because it is a bit too expensive for every day, like a 1000en bottle of dressing, but still tasty. Or drinks and teas and stuff.

Recent vending machine discoveries?

I always get a little kick out of finding a vending machine that dispenses something other than drinks or ice-cream. I have been seeing an increase in vending machines that sell religious items lately. I also like finding vending machines with unusual or attractive wrapping. Have you come across any unusual vending machines lately? Either vending machines that sell something other than the norm or a vending machine with eye-catching wrapping?

What products do you avoid buying in Japan?

I've just written about how I only use sunscreen from home and never buy sunscreen in Japan - further to trying it here and finding it was not even half as good as at home and four times as expensive! Another example I can think of is over the counter pain killers. I don't find otc pain killers effective here. Do you have any products like that? Products that you find are much better at home than in Japan? Or maybe much cheaper in your home country than in Japan?

Nuts, I broke my seasoned donabe! It fell off the fridge and snapped in half. I am bereft. If you follow me, you know that I eschew fancy electronic rice cookers and prepare my rice in a donabe. Have you got reccos for a donabe perfect for rice? A go-to for hot pot?

What are our consumer rights in Japan?

Do you know your consumer rights in Japan? And if so, would you be willing to share anything about them? For example, what is the policy on returns? I am very familiar with my consumer rights in my home country, and they are very widely publicized back home, but information doesn't seem to be as transparent or readily available here. Or is that just me?

Do you have a favorite mascot?

The other day, on "Strawberry Day" I wrote about "Yoshimin", the strawberry mascot of Yoshimi. I thought it might be fun to introduce a few others, so I've just written about "Tokimo" the mascot of Kawagoe. And I plan to introduce a couple of my favorites. It begs the question, do you have a favorite mascot? And how about writing a post on City-cost about your favorite or a local mascot? Pictured "Umerin" who I plan to write about next!

Growing Mushrooms

Here's for a weird hobby. I just saw a video by an American Youtuber that I plan to watch about growing shiitake mushrooms. From what I've seen, it probably needs a bit of space. There was a local market in Fukuoka Prefecture that had a "mushroom room" where they grew and sold mushrooms like maitake and eringi. I also saw a video of a couple in Paris that built a mushroom growing shower room! The local hardware store sells "seeded" logs and shiitake mushroom growing kits. I have seen the logs around people's homes on occasion. It seems like a very odd, but sustainable hobby. Has anyone tried it, or is anyone interested to try this? I wonder how involved or beginner friendly it is.

Hair Color Treatments for Greying Hair

For those of you who have colored grey hair, I'm curious about the hair color treatments available in most drugstores. They seem simpler to use than box dyes. It's been many years since I've colored my hair. It's a chestnut brown and my grey is more silver. I don't hate it but the grey is dry and making me feel like I look older than I am. I'm especially interested in the natural brands that are non-permanent. For example Rishiri Kombu sounds like a decent option. Looking forward to your recommendations and experience.

Entrance ceremony clothes

Soon my kid will have his entrance ceremony at school, and I'm looking for those typical Japanese style ceremony clothes for myself. I'm 1.80m, not so skinny woman, which has huge problems to even find normal clothes in Japan. Does anybody have the same problem and might have any advice, where to get those ceremony clothes in a taller size?

What shampoo brand do you recommend for dandruff?

I have been dealing with this dandruff situation for quite a while now and I still can't seem to figure out how to get rid of this problem. I have tried several shampoo brands/products like head and shoulders, ANGFA organic shampoo and the Honey Deep Moist Shampoo. And none of them worked so far. Some say it's because of hot shower. Well I do shower every day, but I don't use hot shower all the time. I rinse my hair thoroughly after applying shampoo and conditioner. I also tried applying shampoo every other day just to make my hair less dry but I still none of those tricks are working. If there is a product that you recommend that suits every man's budget then I would appreciate it so much.

What are the must-sees in your prefecture (beyond the big three)?

Sustainable tourism is a hot topic that some City Cost members have covered in their blogs. For those correspondents outside the Big Three - Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka - what do you recommend visitors must see in your prefecture? My home base is Chiba Prefecture. I highly recommend visitors check out Narita Omotesando to connect with Edo's past and visit Shinshoji to get a sense of the history of Japan. The adjacent city, Sakura, is another I recommend for the National History Museum and Edo to Taisho era streetscapes.
