Hope everyone's doing OK after the quake last night.

Had a pretty good shake here in the Tokyo area but no damage or things falling over in the apartment. Power went out for a couple of hours and I had trouble getting online via my phone to keep up with the latest developments. The earthquake warning did sound on my phone this time though. (It seems to be quite random.) As usual, this was a reminder to check-up on the location of the torch and the status of the batteries in it. We have a grab bag ready to go, too, but it needs an up date. Sounds like it was a scary experience further north. Hoping everyone is well.

Felt it here, but no major damage. Kids slept through! I know that Jessica (one of the regular contributors on here) is based in Miyagi, so just hoping she and her family are all okay!

It was quite a big shake and I was standing at the door with my wallet, phone and passport in hand getting ready to run out. No one else in the apartment were prepared like that, which I think it is better to be safe than not. Thankfully things are okay in my area!

@JapanRamen 100% better to be safe and ready! These things are always my reminder to check our earthquake backpack and make sure everything still works!

@JapanRamen definitely recommend checking to see if everything works! We had some corrosion on our torch battery ports, so replaced those and added extra "fresh" batteries to our stash.

@JapanRamen I need to do likewise! And get some new batteries.

Your favourite wordplay, pun, or palindrome in Japanese

BigfamJapan blogged about a day for palindromes, and I had a good chuckle. I love wordplay in Japanese! What's your favourite pun, palindrome, or spoonerism (a phrase that gets mangled into another meaning when you switch syllables). For reference, I cracked up when a coworker said "Naiyo ga nai yo" on finding an empty sweets packet.

Did you feel the December 8th earthquake?

There was a large earthquake off the coast of Aomori Prefecture at 11.15 pm on December 8th 2025. We are approximately 700 kilometers from the epicenter, yet we felt it very strongly. Did you feel it and how far away (roughly) are you from the epicenter?
