How often do you eat ramen?

This question is more about the time back when it was safe for us to go out and dine out. How often did you go out for ramen back then? Did you go alone or with someone else? For lunch or dinner? As a huge fan of ramen, I am very interested in hearing about everyone's ramen habits :D

Games, manga, and ramen. Those three things make up my Tri-force lol.

For me it's heavily dependent on the season! In summer I don't really crave it much at all. Winter on the other hand? Load me up! In normal circumstances I'd probably have it twice a week during winter, but right now we're limiting eating out because of the 'rona. As for the time of day, I'd say lunch is my preference - I'd rather not have such a heavy meal in the evening. I probably would say it's normally a close 50/50 - 50% alone, 50% with someone else (usually my family!) Speaking of which, has anyone found any ramen places that do their ramen to-go?

I am a big fan of ラーメン二郎, (Jiro Ramen). I used to eat twice a week before COVID. Nowadays, i eat once a week.

Pre-pandemic maybe once a week for lunch and rarely dinner. Late- night ramen after the pub when I had guests was fun. Street ramen carts are still a thing in parts of suburban Chiba Prefecture where I live.

Even though I love ramen, as a vegetarian my options very limited. Therefore I only used to get ramen whenever I went to Tokyo, which was about once a month. Nowadays I've resolved to making my own at home (which I strongly suspect is healthier anyways).

@genkidesu No ramen shops near me appear to do take-out broth, but some shops sell noodles at the counter. Have you tried the supermarket versions? My local stocks sets of ramen and broth, but also a la carte noodles, broth, and toppings.

@TonetoEdo I've tried some! My favorite is tantanmen, and there was a really good one I got from AEON a couple years back...and then they stopped stocking it! This was a good reminder for me to check the supermarket shelves again and see what's available!

@genkidesu My local Belx has a la carte - packages of fresh noodles and single-serving broth. Let us know what you find at other supermarkets.

I totally agree with genkidesu! I love it in the winter, not in the summer. In the winter I used to go about once every two weeks! The shops that I love always have a line out the door so I don't like to go too often. My favorite shop is only open during lunch, but for other shops, I prefer to go during dinner.

Not as often as I would have liked maybe - like a few times a year? I love it - especially good tsukemen. We don't eat out often, usually for lunch on a day we're both mostly free. I guess I like the idea of eating out alone, but since getting married I'll usually get something simple in a supermarket instead. The last two times we've been for ramen, both restaurants had jars of broth, toppings, and noodles packaged up ready for take out.

We used to eat at our favorite ramen place 2-3 times a month. But ever since the start of pandemic, we have not dined out for a very long time. Yesterday, we took a chance and went to Ichiran at 9 o'clock in the morning so the place won't be crowded yet. It was our first time back there in 12 months. Hashtag craving satisfied :P

@Kanuba What broth do you make for your homemade vegetarian ramen? So far, I’ve experimented with tsuyu and kombu in my veggie stock which I used in shoyu and miso ramen.

@TonetoEdo I mostly use vegetable broth and nerigoma as a soup base and then flavour with a little sake, rice vinegar and shoyu or miso (depending on what I feel like that day). It's probably a rather western approach to ramen, but it comes together in minutes and is super satisfying. That's why I love it so much! Whenever I have some more time, my favourite vegan ramen recipe is this one with kombu dashi and soymilk as a soup base https://www.justonecookbook.com/vegetarian-ramen/

Thanks for all the answers! I used to eat out for ramen two or three times a week, and now obviously I cannot do the same. Cannot wait until it is safe to do so again!

@Kanuba Ah, thanks for the recipe link! Just One Cookbook is one of my go-to sources for washoku. Nerigoma works. I’ll experiment with vegetable broth, and then tantanmen, which depends on sesame flavoring, among other things.

@JapanRamen Have you tried making ramen? Some friends who are restaurant chefs in Canada did a ramen workshop with a master in Osaka. One became a ramen chef, the other makes is for friends and family at home. They said Tonkotsu is the most complicated. They treated me to other varieties in my kitchen when they visited. That’s how I got hooked on homemade ramen.

I probably ate Ramen 2 to 5 times a year. When I was a student probably once a month.

My metabolism isn't what it used to be from 10 years ago, so not as regularly as I'd like. Around once every couple of weeks these days.

I eat ramen pretty often because there are a lot of places over here which is awesome to see. There is so much variety but it’s pretty nice to see the developments of this kind of food all over there with the taste.

Condiments in your fridge?

Just for fun! I was thinking the other day how different the contents of my fridge are to the fridge I grew up with! Just one example, I always have soy sauce in my fridge and usually at least one other unopened bottle in the cupboard. There was never soy sauce in my fridge growing up. And the friends I grew up with don't have soy sauce in their fridges even now. But my Uni friends all have soy sauce in their fridges, because they all lived in Japan for at least a year. I was just wondering what things do you have in your fridge here that you probably wouldn't have in your fridge in your home country had you never lived here.

Golden Week 2025 plans?

This year's Golden Week gives us Tuesday, April 29th, and then potentially a four-day weekend from May 3rd to 6th. How are you intending to spend the break? Will you travel, "staycation", or dare I ask, work through it?
