What magazines with Japan content do you recommend reading?

The question is in the title. Do you recommend any online or printed magazines for lifestyle, culture, food, or language learning? Why do you recommend them?

My local area does a cool print magazine called Life in Minamiuonuma. You can see a bit more about it on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/lifein.minamiuonuma/ I think it's a cool way to both practice language skills and also learn about new things happening in the area. It covers things like businesses that have opened, seasonal events, job information, and more.

I used to buy household magazines for the freebies! But I haven't in years. The only magazines I would buy now are Travel Mooks, but the ones I liked went out of print during the pandemic. I was a loyal purchaser of the quarterly Metropolitan area Walker and Pia magazines. I hope they come back someday - I thought they'd come back this year, but sadly not.

I actually enjoy picking up those free little magazines at train stations about what is in the local ward. The are usually like 20 pages or so, but they do highlight regional things I wouldn't discover otherwise.

Your "buy it for life" purchases in Japan

There's a reddit community I really enjoy reading called r/buyitforlife. As the name suggests, people outline purchases that they've made that truly stand the test of time. Kitchen items, clothing, shoes, etc... What have been your "buy it for life" items here?

How well does your home country insulate homes compared to here?

One thing I struggle with is the lack of insulation in Japanese homes, with summers often feeling like you're living in a sauna and winters feeling like outside is the same temperature as inside. In saying that, my home country isn't fab with insulation either. They're still very much a nation of single paned windows and minimal stuff in the walls to regulate temperature well. Does your home country do insulation well compared to here?

Do you wear kimono? When and where?

In what environments have you worn kimono, hakama, or other traditional clothing? My only kimono experience is Heian period garb - basket hat, veil, and hakama - at a regional festival. I'm curious about daily kimono wear. Have you found a community or school that trains you in kimono wear? How much time do you dedicate to dressing?
