My local area does a cool print magazine called Life in Minamiuonuma. You can see a bit more about it on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/lifein.minamiuonuma/ I think it's a cool way to both practice language skills and also learn about new things happening in the area. It covers things like businesses that have opened, seasonal events, job information, and more.

I used to buy household magazines for the freebies! But I haven't in years. The only magazines I would buy now are Travel Mooks, but the ones I liked went out of print during the pandemic. I was a loyal purchaser of the quarterly Metropolitan area Walker and Pia magazines. I hope they come back someday - I thought they'd come back this year, but sadly not.

I actually enjoy picking up those free little magazines at train stations about what is in the local ward. The are usually like 20 pages or so, but they do highlight regional things I wouldn't discover otherwise.

To be honest, I realized in writing about this 'birthday', that I know next to nothing about Wakayama Prefecture. I'm really interested to hear what your image of the prefecture is. There's a reddit community I really enjoy reading called r/buyitforlife. As the name suggests, people outline purchases that they've made that truly stand the test of time. Kitchen items, clothing, shoes, etc... What have been your "buy it for life" items here?
